The 2023 DS Costume & Flag Design Competition 

Welcome to the first annual Dance Sophisticates Costume Design Competition. DS is all about the custom design process and we want to embrace the passion of developing costume designers on the journey toward realizing their dream of becoming a costume or flag designer.

Submission Requirements

  • The 2023 Dance Sophisticates (DS) Costume design competition is the first annual competition hosted by DS. Designs must be related to Color Guard, Marching Band, or Show Choir.
  • Competitors must submit a high resolution jpeg, PNG or pdf file illustrating their design.
  • Competitors should include detailed, illustrated concepts with any additional design notes for fabrication.
  • Costume illustrations and detailed notes shall be submitted as a package.  Image files must be a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
  • Proof of original work may be required for the technical evaluations by the Dance Sophisticates Design Contest judges. Proof of original work can be, but is not limited to, progress images, early concept sketches, research, notes etc. Keeping a working log is recommended.
  • One design per entry per contestant. 
  • Winners will receive a $150 gas card, the title of 2023 DS Costume Design Champion, and may have their design produced and photographed for promotional materials. All submissions must provide permission for design to be produced by DS.
  • Entries must be submitted to:  tfitzpatrick@dancesoph.com by Midnight on  May 31, 2023
  • For award eligibility, finalists must be willing to participate in a recorded Google Meet to discuss their process, provide permission to manufacture and photograph their design for promotional materials.
  • There are no age restrictions for contestants. 
  • Competitors presenting work that is not their own will be disqualified. Note: found items, use of illustration tools such as brushes, images, patterns and other resource art elements are allowed and encouraged. 

Submission Procedure

  • Contestant must fill out a contest registration form. Upon submission of the form you will receive a registration number. You must include contestant name and registration number in subject of email submission of entry.
  • Designs must be submitted to tfitzpatrick@dancesoph.com. PDF, PNG or JPG with no less than 300dpi will be accepted. 
  • The submitted file must not be larger than 10 MB and must include contestant name and registration number in subject of email submission of entry. Entries must be submitted to:  tfitzpatrick@dancesoph.com by Midnight on May 31, 2023

Registration and Submission Deadline
The competition registration and submission period will be open from April 13, 2023 to May 31, 2023 at 11:59PM EST. After completing the registration form, a number will be assigned to you and must be included with submission of all materials.

Finalists will be notified on June 7, 2023 and will compete in a final round of judging on Friday, June 9 at the DS office in Indianapolis, IN. Once a winner has been selected we will coordinate a Google Meet to record a discussion of the design process to be shared on DS social media channels.

Registration Process:  Complete the registration form to obtain a registration number anytime before the registration and submission deadline on May 31st, 2023 at 11:59 PM EST.

Parental Consent Form: If the contestant is under 13 years of age, you will be asked to provide parental consent to participate. This will be gathered in the registration form prior to registration of contestant.
